Watthana District
Watthana is one of 50 districts of Bangkok, Thailand. Neighbouring districts are Ratchathewi, Huai Khwang, Suan Luang, Phra Khanong, Khlong Toei, Sathon, and Pathum Wan.
Watthana was a separate district following the split from Khlong Toei in 1998 to provide better service to its population. The district obtained its name from Princess Galyani Vadhana, the elder sister of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. Watthana or Vadhana means development. The area is among the most developed part of Bangkok.
On 1 January 2009, Watthana was the location of the Santika Club fire, which killed 66 and injured 222.
The district is sub divided into three sub districts from west to east:
1. Khlong Toei Nuea, from the railway to Soi Sukhumvit 31
2. Khlong Tan Nuea, from Soi 31 to Soi 63 ( Ekkamai )
3. Phra Khanong Nuea, from Soi 63 to Soi 81 ( Siri Phot )
The area between Sukhumvit Soi 1 and Sukhumvit Soi 63 is popular as a residential area for western expatriates. Japanese nationals tend to prefer from Soi 21 Asoke intersection upwards, especially Soi Thong Lo. Rentals tend to be higher in the even numbered streets between Soi 8 and Soi 28 and in the odd numbered streets between Soi 15 and Soi 39. Soi 12 is occupied mainly by Indian expatriates.
The areas of Soi Cowboy ( between Soi 21 Asoke and Soi 23 ) and Nana Entertainment Plaza ( Soi 4 ) are packed full of go-go bars. Restaurants of various levels of luxury exist all along the road, as well as hotels including famous names such as The Westin, J W Marriott, Sheraton, and Four Points by Sheraton.
Sukhumvit Road – Vendors selling counterfeit DVDs, T-shirts and tourist trinkets populate the sidewalks from Soi 3 to Soi 15.
Foodland – One of the branches of the Thai grocery chain is located on Soi 5. It also has a 24-hour coffee shop. The food here is excellent and I use it myself, because of the quality and price.
Villa Plaza – Located between the Sukhumvit 33 nightlife area and Soi 31, the plaza is a shopping and entertainment area anchored by the Villa ( open 24 hours ) and Fuji supermarkets. It also has some Japanese-only clubs, as well as British-style pubs.
Thong Lo – This street has become trendy in recent years, with a number of upmarket restaurants and boutique shopping centres.
Major Sukhumvit – A large branch of the Major Cineplex theatre chain is located near the Bangkok Sky Train Ekkamai station, with a bowling alley, restaurants and shops.
Little Africa – near the Grace Hotel, in Soi 3, here you will find a network of alleys between Nana Nuea ( means Northern Nana ) and the Sukhumvit road and Soi 3/1 is home of many Middle Eastern restaurants and is known as Soi Arab in Nana.
Soi Cowboy – Nightlife red light district with go-go bars is located off Asoke, near the intersection with Sukhumvit. This area is crowded at night time from around 08.00pm onwards. The Asoke Intersection here is not a easy road to cross, having many lanes of traffic. You can always do as I do and use the underground passageway of the Metro underground, its a little longer but no traffic to worry about.

The motorbike taxi ride along Sukhumvit Road from Terminal 21 to Soi 4 Nana in Bangkok, Thailand. Quite a hair-raising journey. Past the bars on Soi 4 – Morning Night, Stumble Inn, Hillary Bar 4 and the sexy bargirls.
